Breaking down the reality of real estate school – what I learned in school VS what I have learned from years of experience

What I learned in school probably won’t surprise you, but what I DIDN’T learn just might.

The basics of real estate school is how to serve the public fairly…which is definitely very important!

But then we get our license and realize we don’t even know how to fill out a purchase agreement (in Missouri anyway). Here in Texas, there is a 30 hour course on forms.

Fun fact: It takes twice as long to become licensed here in Texas. 180 hours of class vs just 72 hours in Missouri, and the continuing education requirement is 96 hours for the first two years here vs only 18 hours in Missouri. I was impressed by how much more thorough real estate school is here in TX.

Thank goodness for my days of mortgage lending & being a GC back in the 1900’s (couldn’t resist making myself sound like a total dinosaur), I at least felt like I knew some things going into this career.

Then there was Fannie & Freddie to make sure that I learned most everything else very quickly. I started my career in Real Estate out selling foreclosed homes for Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac I learned very quickly, and hands on, a ton about how to anticipate the unexpected and how to think “outside of the box” to problem solve and keep moving towards closing. I also saw a lot of things I cant unsee (or un smell Not much can surprise me anymore.

Anyway, I am constantly attending any extra classes I can get my hands on, from Understanding Surveys & Flood Zones, to Death, Guardianship and Real Estate. I strive to have a deeper understanding of anything real estate related so that I can better serve my clients (turned friends) long after we have closed on their home.

The point is, finishing real estate school is a lot like finishing high school. , only to find that you didn’t even learn how to fill out a form, or make you own Doctors appointment…. The only real difference is that , ‘ !

Name something you think be taught in high school that isn’t.
